Battling Llanelli claim losing bonus point at league leaders

A youthful Llanelli side pushed league leaders Aberavon all the way before falling to a 31-24 defeat in a keenly-contested Indigo Premiership clash at the Talbot Athletic Ground.

Llanelli showed plenty of early endeavour, but were unable to turn pressure into points.

Instead it was the Wizards who displayed their clinical edge, punishing the visitors for a handling error to send centre Joe Gage over for a converted score.

Full-back Stef Andrews added a second on 25 minutes as the home side started to assert control, but back came Llanelli with Scarlets second row Jac Price powering over from close range for a try that was converted by fly-half Josh Phillips.

Phillips added a penalty just before the interval and it meant there was just two points in the game at the turnaround, Aberavon leading 12-10.

That advantage was extended to 19-10 when replacement hooker Luke Davies claimed a third try for the home side and the Wizards had their fourth and bonus-point score on 61 minutes when back-rower Ashton Evans forced his way over in the corner.

But to their credit, Llanelli kept on battling. Scrum-half Luke Davies sniped over after a concerted period of pressure on the home line and replacement Tal Rees added the extras.

A powerful home scrum led to openside Andrew Waite crossing for Aberavon’s fifth, but Llaneli were still not done with Fijian wing Ben Raivalitia (pictured) claiming a fine opportunist score to secure Llanelli a deserved losing bonus point.

Llanlli return to Parc y Scarlets on Saturday when they take on North Walians RGC 1404.
