Cardiff Met RFC 15-56 Llanelli
On a bright but very cold afternoon in Cardiff, Llanelli came out as comfortable winners is this first round National cup tie. They scored seven tries in all and in fairness to the Students they also contributed to a very entertaining game. Outside half Lewis Williams was on fire with the boot, contributing 21 points, 3 pens and 6 conversions.
Llanelli scored two tries in the first quarter, one a piece from wing Matthew Jenkins and captain Chris Long to secure an early lead. A couple of penalties and a conversion from Lewis Williams opened up an 18 pt advantage. Following a mistake in midfield the Students counter attacked a Luke Northmore crossed for the try which was converted by Tom Morgan. On the half hour another strong attack from the visitors resulted in Matthew Jenkins crossing for his second try of the match. Again, Lewis Williams slotted the conversion to extend the lead. Just before the half ended Tom Morgan kicked his second penalty to make the score Llanelli 25 Cardiff Met 10.
The second half continued in much the same way as the first with Llanelli dominating possession and the Students trying to capitalise when given the opportunity. Llanelli ran in four more tries, Jack Condy, Richard Bassett, Ioan Hughes and Ashleigh Hyndman to emphasise the difference between the two sides. Met scored one further try from a five metre lineout but with in the end it was the visitors who booked their place in the second round.
