Llanelli opened their 2017/18 season with a ‘friendly’ fixture at Pontypool.
Prop Rhys Thomas led the team from the front, in an abrasive encounter. A few early fisticuffs soon gave way to some attractive rugby from both sides.
Poola scored three first half tries conjured by Player Coach Matthew Jones, one of which he converted for a 17-10 halftime lead. While Llanelli’s two tries were scored by Man of the match Ashley Evans and debutant Oli Reyland.
Both sides made several changes in the second period. Ashley Evans scored his second try with a fine individual effort and Poola replied with an excellent converted try under the posts.
Down 24-15 with ten minutes remaining flyer Ryan Conbeer squeezed in the corner after a great flat pass from Jack Condy and Jake Newman added the conversion from the touchline. The try of the match was scored with just a couple of minutes left on the clock with a move starting deep in their own 22 and finished with a 50 metre sprint to the line from another debutant centre Matthew Jenkins.
Next Saturday Llanelli entertain Carmarthen Quins in the Principality Premiership at Parc Y Scarlets with a 2.30pm kick off.
