Match Report

Hard Fought Llanelli Win

Llanelli 24-6 RGC 1404 After narrowly missing out at Merthyr last week, the boys took that performance into this game and came out deserved winners. An extremely good all round performance against a strong, well drilled side. Following match report courtesy of Huw S Thomas

In another highly entertaining game between two sides intent on a free flowing approach, Llanelli were deserved and clear cut winners.

The North Walians were looking for a third consecutive win of the season over the Sospans but can have no complaints about this setback

In a game switched to a Scarlets training pitch, the Llanelli side had the more cohesion both up front and behind and were also able to stop all RGC efforts for a try,

They also had a very good goalkicker in centre Billy McBryde and the most outstanding player on the field in the blue helmeted all action flanker Ellis Thomas who was everywhere in attack and defence.

The Sospans were alive and alert from the start and got the opening score after 13 minutes.

They refused a penalty in front of the posts but the resulting scrum brought dividends when quick and accurate passing put in wing Matthew Jenkins.

McBryde and fly half Jacob Botica then swapped penalties to make it 11-6 at the break,

Scrum half Declan Smith, centre Ollie Reyland and McBryde all made good runs before two more McBryde penalties made it 17-6.

With  RGC centre Tian Loots yellow carded for a blatant offside Llanelli reached for the jugular.

A fine counterattacking try after a breakout by Jenkins was supported by Reyland who sent full back Kalum Evans racing in under the posts for a converted try.

A late flourish from RGC after home lock Ashleigh Hyndman had been yellow carded for a high tackle came to nothing against all embracing and powerful tackling

Coach Paul Fisher acknowledged the great improvement that Llanelli have made in recent weeks,

“After outplaying Bargoed and being desperately unlucky not to win at league leaders Merthyr, this win confirmed our increasing confidence.”

“RGC were well ahead of us in the table but I thought we had the better of them in all phases”

“We are building a very good team spirit after a poor start to the season and I’m sure there is a lot to come from this squad of players.”

“We created a lot of good try scoring opportunities and the margin of difference does not reflect our dominance.”

“All the squad played well and flanker Ellis Thomas in particular whilst Billy McBryde’s goalkicking was a potent factor.”

“The Premiership is ultra competitive this season but I now feel we are starting to more than hold our own against the top teams.”
