Former Wales fly-half Ceri Sweeney came off the replacements bench to seal Pontypridd a dramatic Principality Premiership victory at Parc y Scarlets.

The 36-year-old came on with his side hanging on to a 31-29 lead to score 10 points with a penalty and a converted try.

That was after Llanelli stunned their visitors by coming back from 28-3 down with four tries for Ryan Davies (2), Aled Morris and Dion Jones.

Earlier Ponty had scored four tries through Dane Blacker (2), Alex Webber and Lewis I Williams.

Llanelli, with eight changes from the side that were hammered at Carmarthen Quins, showed much more intent especially up front.

Despite an encouraging opening Llanelli went behind to a finely conceived try. Good handling down the right saw Williams kick ahead and Blacker won the foot race to collect and go over for Callum Hall to convert.

Llanelli responded four minutes later with a Billy McBryde penalty but they should really have then gone ahead after piling the pressure on in the scrum.

But after a series of scrum penalties they were forced to spin it wide and full-back Alex Summerhill put in a try saving tackle on wing Ryan Conbeer.

And at the end of the half Ponty showed how to turn pressure into points when Garyn Smith put Webber over. Hall converted to make it 14-3 at the break.

Ponty scored two tries in the space of three minutes early in the second half to secure the bonus point. First Blacker ran in unopposed for his second score before Williams also went over.

But the 25-point lead was dented by three Llanelli tries in the space of seven minutes for Morris, Davies and Jones, two of them converted by McBryde and Jones.

Hall did pull a penalty back but Ponty’s 28-3 lead was pegged back to 31-22.

And incredibly seven minutes from time Davies went over for his second try to seal Llanelli a try bonus with Jones’s conversion cutting Ponty’s lead to only two points.

It took the old head of Sweeney to come on at outside-half and steady the Ponty ship with a 76th minute penalty followed up by a try and a touchline conversion.

A big thanks to our sponsors for the Pontypridd Principality Premiership match
