Merthyr the Championship side raced into an 11-point lead at half time thanks to tries from Alex Howeman and Rhys Downes before holding on in the second 40
A bruising and ultimately close encounter saw Championship side Merthyr deservedly eliminate their Premiership hosts from the cup largely courtesy of a five minute spell late in the second half.
To their credit, Llanelli did fight back to produce a nail biting finish.
It was the Championship side that did much of the early attacking but when they conceded two penalties in quick succession on only Llanelli’s second foray into their half, Home outside half Josh Lewis gave his side a three point advantage with quarter of an hour of the game gone.
Having missed two earlier attempts to get his side on the scoreboard, Merthyr full back Matthew Jarvis levelled things up with a 24th minute penalty but another successful kick for Josh Lewis saw Llanelli quickly back ahead.
The first try of the game came two minutes before the interval when, from a lineout on the Llanelli 10m line an inside pass by outside half Dean Gunter set up win Alex Howeman to cross under the posts. That was rapidly followed by a try for scrum half Rhys Downes with a second successful conversion for Jarvis making the half time score 6-17.
The home side narrowed the gap with a successful penalty kick three minutes into the second half by two further attempts went astray. Llanelli were destined to spend much of the second half furiously defendend and the visitors appeared to have the game under control until, with ten minutes for go, a rare visit to the Merthyr half produced a try for centre Nathan Edwards.
With two minutes to go Llanelli were awarded a penalty in front of the posts and opted to take a scrum but conceded a penalty of their own enabling Merthyr to release the pressure and hang on for the win.
