Llanelli travelled to wet and windy Carmarthen in their second Fosters Challenge Cup Pool game.
Llanelli won the toss and chose to play with the big wind on their backs and were on the attack from the off.
Skipper and outside half Gareth Walters kicked a 3rd minute penalty and further pressure saw centre Paul Davies crash over the try line which Walters converted for an early 10 point lead.
Carmarthen were attacking into the wind at every opportunity and were rewarded with a well worked try from wing Gavin Thomas that Craig Evans converted.
On the half hour Walters kicked his second penalty but it was the Quins that finished the half on a big positive.
Following several failed driving lineouts, Llanelli’s unlucky second row Liam Puckett was singled out for collapsing the Quins driving maul and was yellow carded with the homesters awarded the 8 point penalty try on the half time whistle.
The yellow card 10 minute spell proved a fruitful period for Carmarthen scoring 22 points as Dylan Morgan & Gavin Thomas also touched down with Evans converting one for a commanding 30-12 lead.
Llanelli were showing great ball retention but could not get the territorial advantage needed to get points on the board despite Carmarthen’s second row Jon Gardiner also receiving a yellow card.
Both teams back to a full compliment saw Quins wing Gavin Thomas grab his hatrick try converted by Evans and Llanelli’s second row Christian Long ended the game with a well worked try from the Llanelli pack.
Llanelli coach Phil John was upbeat at the final whistle despite the defeat. ‘We finished the game very strongly and five of that pack still could be still playing Youth rugby. They will have gained a lot of experience against a strong Quins XV. tonight”
