Llanelli 14 Bridgend 12
A LATE penalty try snatched victory for Llanelli over Bridgend in an error-strewn Principality Premiership encounter in driving wind and rain at Parc y Scarlets.
It completed a league double for Llanelli over the Ravens – although it was a far cry from the last time the sides met back on Boxing Day at the Brewery Field when Llanelli ran riot 64-8.
There never looked like being a repeat of that this time, but it was Llanelli who took the lead in the 10th minute.
After a number of drives inside the Bridgend 22, the ball went through the hands of fly-half Billy McBryde and then flanker Greg George to send wing Ashley Evans over in the corner, although the conversion was missed.
The hosts had plenty of the ball but, with their own indiscipline, failed to make the visitors pay for turning the ball over on numerous occasions with poor kicking.
The Ravens got themselves level on the scoreboard after 31 minutes when No. 8 Ashton Evans piled over in the left corner although fly-half Joseph Scrivens’ conversion attempt was wide.
Conditions played their part but, with the hosts still struggling to gain a foothold, Bridgend ran over try number two on 54 minutes.
Outside centre Morgan Jones was the scorer after good work in the build up from full-back Marc Bennett and Scrivens to put Bridgend 12-6 up – although Scrivens’ conversion attempt was wide in the wind.
And that was the way it stayed until three minutes from time when, after a barrage of pressure, Llanelli were awarded a penalty try after the Ravens collapsed a scrum to snatch victory from a forgettable encounter.
