Llanelli RFC succumbed to a heavy 52-24 defeat as they exited the Swalec Cup on Saturday in a scrappy affair at home to Cross Keys.
The home side started tentatively and fell behind early on to a Ryan James try, however the hosts took advantage after Ethan Davies missed his conversion and struck back with a penalty try after half an hour. Frazier Climo attended to kicking duties to put Llanelli in front, however their lead was short lived as Cross Keys were awarded a penalty try of their own not long after, Davies’ kick this time giving them maximum points.
As the game opened up, Llanelli capitalised with an excellent individual try from number 15 Steff Evans to level the scores, however the full back looked to injure himself in the process and was replaced just before half-time. Climo missed the resulting kick as the two sides went into the break at 12-12.
Cross Keys soon regained the lead after the restart with a Scott Matthews try well converted by Davies, but Llanelli hit back within 60 seconds through Steff Evans’ replacement Josh Adams. Climo kicked over again to restore parity, but it was short-lived for the home side.
Four quick tries in a devastating 20 minutes from Cross Keys for Ethan Davies, James Leadbeater, Simon Williams and a second for Matthews, all of which were converted by Davies, sealed the win for the away team. Despite a battling final 10 minutes from Llanelli in which they reduced the deficit slightly through a Frazier Climo try which he was unable to convert, they inevitably succumbed to defeat.
It was in the end Cross Keys who had the final say, winger Nathan Trowbridge racing home from 30 yards after a calamitous error in the middle of the park that summed up a miserable afternoon for Llanelli. The conversion attempt was missed by Davies, but it mattered little as the visitors’ secured safe passage to the next round of the cup.
