LLANELLI signed off a difficult Premiership season with victory over regional rivals Llandovery at Parc y Scarlets thanks to No. 8 Owain Morgan's try two minutes from time.

But Llandovery's two bonus points — for scoring four tries and being within seven points of their conquerors — at least secured them eighth spot in the final table to leave them two points clear of ninth-placed Llanelli.

"We stuck at it and were rewarded with a win," said Llanelli forwards coach Ioan Cunningham. "It was not pretty, but we took the chance to at least end the season on a good note."

In what was a fractured and uninspiring game, the Drovers' ill-discipline again let them down when they were ahead 24-20 with time almost up.

Two yellow cards inside a minute gave Llanelli, who had gone into the match after a miserable run of results, the opportunity to trundle over from a driving line-out when the Drovers had lost both flanker Shaun Miles and lock Matthew Harbut for pulling down a maul and an illegal tackle at the line-out.

Morgan ploughed over for his second try of the game and full-back Gareth Walters converted to seal an unlikely win. That and three yellow cards in all — lock Bryn Griffiths was the other recipient — against just the one for Llanelli hooker Taylor Davies, did for the Drovers.

In wing Aaron Warren, the scorer of a hat-trick of tries, Llandovery had the most dangerous runner on the field, but those inside him failed to spread the ball in the second half.

There was irony too in that the Llanelli hero was Llandovery product Walters who grabbed a try, all three conversions and a couple of penalties for a 17-point haul.

The home side led 20-12 at the break, but were eventually overtaken when wing Rhys Williams went over for the Drovers to take a 24-20 lead, only for the Llandovery yellow cards to prove fatal.

Both clubs will have new faces on and off the field next year and will quickly hope to forget disappointing seasons.
