2014/2015 Principality Premiership
Neath 18 v 23 Llanelli
07 February 2015 - The Gnoll, Neath

Match Report

Back to the wall

The good will of 13 clubs paved the way for Llanelli to record a much needed and surprise win at the Gnoll against Neath today.

With the current organisation and drive of Welsh Rugby for its clubs /players to play up, it was very much highlighted by Tata Steel, Newcastle Emlyn, Ammanford, Ystradgynlais, Lampeter Town, Yr Hendy, Dunvant, Cwmgors, Pontarddulais, Carm Q, Llangennech and Mynydd y Garreg /Scarlets Academy in today’s victory.

Following our huge defeat to last Sunday’s ‘Red Hot’ Quins, our next fixture against Neath was always going to be a massive task for everyone at the club.

Kev George and the ‘Scud’ ( Robert Walters)  much stretched squad was  drilled and encouraged to give their all on the day and they came up trumps in a game which maybe could have gone either way.

A try from Neath’s Sion Crocker and conversion from Rhodri Cole after seven minutes was cancelled out by three ‘big’ penalties from the reliable Gareth Walters playing at outside half.

Llanelli extended their lead following a fine Sam Evans left hand touchline run and a deft inside kick inside was followed up and and neatly touched down by debutant NCE’s full back Shaun Leonard.

Neath came out of the second half playing down their favourite slope and with only three minutes on the clock saw Jordan Collier touch-down.

In true ‘Llanelli/Scarlet fashion the boys responded with a superb team try from wing Richard Thomas with Gareth Walters kicking the simple conversion.

On 68 minutes Neath outside half Rhodri Cole kicked a snip penalty, which brought the home team back to 18-23, and from that point onwards it was a case of ‘backs against the wall’ for the hard-nosed visitors.

Superb defence was the order of the day for the rest of the match as outstanding skipper Powell led his boys over the finishing line.
