Bonus point away

The Scarlets region local derby went the way of Llanelli in a game either side could have won but which the visitors just about deserved to do so.

A solid scrum and some great defensive work late on was rewarded with a last gasp bonus point try to deny the Drovers the consolation of a losing bonus point.

Llandovery were of the blocks with a penalty from fly half James Garland but Llanelli replied immediately when centre Johnny Lewis slipped a tackle to cross.

Co-centre Frazier Climo converted and with both teams in positive mood play was swift and open with Llandovery’s two internationals – scrum half Rhodri Williams and centre Adam Warren – prominent.

A high tackle on the other Warren – wing Aaron – allowed Garland to kick a 40 metre penalty, soon answered by an even better effort from Kiwi Climo.

After skipper Phil Day had made a barnstorming run through the middle, Llanelli hooker Darran Harris was yellow carded in his own 22 to let Garland kick an easy penalty.

Despite being down to 14 men, the visitors scored a terrific try from a sweeping move up the right with swift handling sending Climo racing in for a converted try and a 17-9 lead.

Garland and Climo penalties made it at 20-12 to Llanelli at half time but the Drovers were unlucky not to score soon after the break when wing Richard Williams was controversially refused a try for the barest of knock-ons.

Llandovery but were kept out by sound tackling and covering before Garland closed the gap with his fifth penalty.

Climo then put his side into a winning position when he put wing Kyle Evans in at the corner but the Drovers responded by pounding away at the Llanelli line.

Llandovery eventually got through in the 77th minute when lock Richard Catchpole sidestepped two men on his way through to a try converted by Garland. In a hectic finale, Llandovery tried to run ball from their own line only to lose possession and let flanker Lewis Rawlins crash through for a try converted by Climo.
