Match Report

Bonus point home win

A BRACE from wing Kyle Evans inspired Llanelli to a comfortable bonus-point Principality Premiership win over struggling Aberavon at Parc Y Scarlets on Friday night.

The hosts outscored the Wizards four tries to two with centres Johnny Lewis and Richard Thomas also going over while wing Frazier Climo kicked 15 points.

Aberavon had shot out of the blocks and were 10-0 inside 15 minutes. Outside centre Stef Andrews’ got the game’s opening try on six minutes, which was converted by outside half Nic Damjanovic, who then booted a penalty six minutes later.

But Llanelli soon hit back to lead 17-10 at the break thanks to tries from Evans and Lewis – both converted by Climo, who also kicked a first half penalty.

Thomas stretched that lead further three minutes after the re-start, which Climo again converted, before adding two further penalties on 48 and 51 minutes respectively.

Damjanovic kicked a second penalty for Aberavon, but they never looked capable of mounting a comeback and Evans’ secured Llanell’s deserved bonus point with his second try in the final minute – which this time went unconverted.

There was still time for replacement Dan Davies to grab a second score for the visitors – also unconverted – but it was scant consolation.

In what was only Llanelli’s second home league fixture of the campaign – their third win from seven overall moves them up to sixth in the Premiership, while Aberavon’s sixth defeat from seven leaves them bottom.

Llanelli head of rugby Anthony Buchanan said:

“The most important thing was the bonus-point win.

“With the LV= Cup in full flow, there’s a lot of moving around of players at this moment in time, but it’s given lots of players in the squad an opportunity – and I was delighted with a few of them.

“Aberavon bought a good attitude to play rugby and caught us in the early part of the game.

“But we fought hard and were able to stop their momentum, take control of the game and put the foundations down for the win

“Our squad will get stronger with players coming back and I’m hoping that, by the end of the season, we’ll be somewhere up there with the rest of them.”
