Llanelli welcomed Neath RFC to Parc Y Scarlets on Friday evening in the fourth round of league games in the Principality Premiership.
Llanelli got off to a flying start with Jordan Williams touching down in just the third minute. Josh Lewis converted and added two further penalties in what was looking to be a tough night for the visitors.
However things took a turn for the worse for the home team when wing Josh Adams was shown red for taking his opposite number out when he was in the air. Then a couple of minutes later prop Peter Edwards was shown yellow for a technical infringement in the red zone.
Neath grabbed the opportunity and scored a good forward drive try from Callum Thomas with young Luke Price adding the conversion.
Thirteen man Llanelli extended their lead when Josh Lewis kicked his third penalty of the night to 16-7.
On 30 minutes consistent referee Rhys Thomas saw fit to yellow card former Scarlet’s Academy player Gareth Thomas to ease the Neath numerical advantage somewhat. Llanelli responded immediately with a converted try from Steffan Evans to go in at halftime with a sixteen-point advantage. The question was would it be enough?
It was Neath that flew out of the blocks at the re- start with an outstanding try from young full back Dafydd Howells converted by Price. And a comeback and win looked more than a possibility.
But good leadership from skipper Adam Powell and the accuracy of the Josh Lewis cultured right foot kept the scoreboard ticking over for Llanelli.
A smart drop goal and penalty from Josh was followed by a captain’s try with Josh adding the extras.
Then with five minutes left on the clock the Vinci Facilities Man of the match Steffan Evans grabbed his opportunity for his second try and the teams bonus point to end the scoring.
A good bonus point home win and a steady improvement will have pleased the home coaches.
Llanelli next play away to Bridgend Ravens on Thursday 16th October in a friendly fixture in preparation for their next game in the Principality Premiership again away to Newport RFC on Saturday November 1st.
Llanelli RFC 41 – 12 Neath RFC
