Llanelli progressed through to the quarter-finals of this seasons Swalec Cup at the expense of the excellent Cardiff Met students which was played at Cardiff Arms Park .
Llanelli were looking confident in the first period and coupled with some excellent defence kept the free running Students down to just 3 points with a penalty kicked by outside half Mark Cooke.
Llanelli openside Daniel Thomas showed good pace in his interception try and the rest of the points came from Llanelli’s Man of the Match Josh Lewis.
Josh kicked a fine opening penalty after 10 minutes and then cut the Students defence on 28 minutes for an excellent individual try which he converted for a 15-3 half time lead.
The Students opened the second half in stunning fashion and within 12 minutes scored two top tries from Jamie Harris and Tim Thompson to level the match. Llanelli although playing some nice rugby were continually turning ball over through unforced errors.
Chris Lewis then kicked a penalty and the Students were in the lead for the first time of the match. Llanelli responded immediately with another two penalties from Josh Lewis to regain the lead with seven minutes remaining.
Referee Wayne Davies was contributing to style of the match and the Students put one last attack together and looked certain to score in the corner only to be denied by some brilliant defensive work which saw the Premiership side hold out and go into the hat for Tuesday’s draw.
Next Saturday Llanelli are back into Principality Premiership action away to the Bridgend Ravens.
