Match Report

away win

RELEGATION-threatened Swansea missed a golden opportunity to steal a late Principality Premiership victory out of the hands of Llanelli after fly-half Luke Price failed with an injury-time conversion.

It could have been a famous St Helen’s victory that defined their season, but it was not to be.

But they still bagged a losing bonus point which did not look possible when they leaked a try after only 22 seconds and then trailed 24-9 shortly after the interval.

However, with a recovery based on a strong scrum, Swansea hit their bitter rivals with three tries in the final quarter through Tom Sloane, Richard Williams and Tegan Price in the final quarter.

When Tegan Price went over down the right to score after 82 minutes it left his namesake Luke with a tricky conversion a couple of metres in from the touchline.

Price had missed a similar one 10 minutes earlier, but unfortunately for him he could not re-adjust and Llanelli escaped over the Loughor Bridge with the four points.

“Perhaps we just turned up thinking we were going to win, but we must realise there are no free meals in the Welsh Premiership,” said a relieved Llanelli director of rugby Anthony Buchanan.

At the start of the match, it had looked as if it might have been one-way traffic for Llanelli as wing Mike Poole ran in straight from the kick-off.

Though the bottom club were left stunned by the early shock, they managed to get on the board with the first of four penalties for Luke Price.

But Llanelli always looked dangerous on the attack and scored a second try through flanker Dan Thomas after 17 minutes as Swansea’s defence looked decidedly shaky.

Llanelli did have No. 8 Craig Price sin-binned late in the first half, but it did not alter their control as they led 17-9 at the interval.

After half-time, Poole ran in for his second try and Jordan Williams scored two penalties, but after that Llanelli lost their way.

Swansea won the second half 20-13 and that should give them some comfort and confidence as they try to win a relegation dogfight.
