Llanelli win Regional Derby

Llanelli hosted Scarlet’s Regional neighbours Llandovery in a pre- Christmas Principality Premiership game at Parc Y Scarlets, which was kindly sponsored by Mr Huw Francis of Hygrove Holdings and Mr Geraint Hughes of Duraseal.

Llanelli had the best of starts opening with a fine try from right wing Kyle Evans with just 2 minutes on the clock, which Dion Jones converted.

Both Llandovery  & Llanelli were hungry in attack and defence and could have added to their try score tally but as half time approached it was just two penalties from Dion Jones and one from Llandovery’s James Garland that went on the score sheet for a slender 13-3 half time lead.

Llanelli continued to dominate the game early in second half and kept the score board ticking with a couple of further penalties from Dion in 42nd & 56th minutes.

On 58 minutes, Llandovery had Big Bryn Griffiths, a former popular Llanelli & Scarlet player, yellow carded but Llanelli failed to make the numerical advantage count. Then Llanelli’s Kirby Myhill received yellow and the Drovers immediately responded when a driving maul which was deemed by Referee Ian Davies to be have been deliberately collapsed and awarded a penalty try which replacement outside half Ian Brooks converted.

At 19-10 the next score was going to be important and further Llanelli pressure saw Llandovery concede another penalty, which Dion Jones again stroked over.

Two tries at the end from scrum half Jak Evans and the outstanding Dion Jones, which Dion converted, for a 26-point haul, put the icing on the cake for the home team in their hard fought win.

Although Dion’s contribution was huge, Head Coach  Kevin George chose the exciting prospect Lewis Rawlings as man of the match who was in terrific form

and is a genuine, all action, back five player.

Next Saturday December 28th at 2.30pm, Llanelli travel across the Loughor Bridge to play Swansea RFC in another exciting Principality Premiership encounter.
