Match Report

Losing bonus point

Llanelli hosted Championship contenders Rotherham Titans at Parc Y Scarlets in Round 3 of this season’s British & Irish Cup.

Ace kicker Josh Lewis opened the scoring for the home team but it was the visitors who deservedly got the first try of the day with an excellent try from hooker Tom Cruse converted by Lloyd Hayes. Josh Lewis then kicked his second penalty before open side flanker Jack Preece got the Titans second try again converted by Hayes. Both sides were playing with width and pace with the visitors edging most facets of play.  Just before halftime Josh completed his hatrick of penalties to keep Llanelli well and truly in the game.

Two quick penalties kicked by Hayes within five minutes of the restart extended the visitors lead to 20-9. Llanelli had to score next to keep them in the game and duly responded when the excellent replacement Ed Price crashed over after a bit of quick thinking and enterprise from Dan Thomas that Josh converted.

The last half hour remained scoreless yet very entertaining as both defences were at their best as Irish referee Kieran Barry blew for full time for an important away win for the Titans.

Llanelli’s task now is to go to Rotherham and win next Saturday, kick off 2pm.
