Llanelli’s hopes of qualifying for the British and Irish Cup quarter finals came to a disappointing end in Galway against Connacht A.
Llanelli were led by Steffan Hughes knowing that only a bonus point win would give them an outside chance to qualify.
You could see from the start that the young Connacht team were not going to roll over as they had done in their comprehensive defeat at Parc y Scarlets in the reverse fixture.
However, unfortunately this match was the complete contrast from the home game. Both defences were at their best and probably Llanelli’s best passages of play and scoring opportunities were blown when Connaght were down to 14 men just before half time, following the yellow card of No 8 Eaghan Masterson.
Craig Ronaldson kicked a 10th minute penalty for the Eagles, which was the scoring highlight of a frustrating first half.
Craig Ronaldson kicked another three second half penalties with Llanelli’s Josh Lewis kicking a fine penalty to make it 12 -3 on 68 minutes. With 5 minutes left on the clock Aaron Warren again showed great finishing skills as he picked up a lovely grubber from his skipper to touch down in the corner which 18 year old replacement outside half Daniel Jones superbly converted.
Hopes of a dramatic finish to the game fizzled out as Connacht recorded their third home win after previous British & Irish Cup wins over Bedford and high flying Rotherham.
