Llanelli travelled to Clifton Lane in the reverse fixture of this season’s British and Irish Cup to play English Championship contenders Rotherham.
After suffering a home defeat last week, Llanelli knew they had to win to be in with a real chance to again reach the quarter finals.
Rotherham had the big wind at their backs in the first period soon opened the scoring after just six minutes with a try from tight head prop Colin Quigley converted by Richard Hayes.
Scarlet Steve Shingler, back from injury at inside centre, opened the Llanelli account with a fine struck penalty.
Hayes then kicked two late penalties for a 13-3 halftime lead.
Llanelli full of confidence after an evenly contested first half applied immediate pressure on the homesters and were awarded three penalties in succession in the 41st, 43rd and 48th minute with Shingler converting them all.
At 13 -12 and Llanelli again on the attack a crucial turnover was superbly used by Rotherham and finished with an excellent try by winger Curtis Wilson which Hayes converted.
Llanelli then lost their outside half Josh Lewis (harmstring) and Steve Shingler (shoulder) to be replaced by Scarlets Academy products Josh Adams and Steffan Hughes.
Full back Dion Jones moved up to the 10 jersey and performed admirably and when he cut the deficit with a penalty with six minutes remaining it looked as if his team could go on and win the match.
But it was not to be, as Rotherham held firm and Llanelli had to make the long journey back with just one losing bonus point.
Llanelli next face Bedford home and Connaught A away in the last two rounds of this season’s B & I Cup in January, knowing they must win both matches to have a slim chance of getting the second best runner-up spot.
