Match Report

Another hard fought home win

LLANELLI gained revenge for last week’s defeat at London Scottish with a deserved victory at Parc y Scarlets.

It was a good day for Llanelli’s captain Craig Hawkins who made his 200th appearance for the club and who has been a model of consistency since 2004.

“Ripper”– an intelligent, mobile and try-snatching hooker – would certainly have played for Wales if he had been a few inches taller and a couple of stones heavier, and, even at 33 years of age, he was in his element in this free flowing game.

Llanelli had a great start when after just two minutes good approach work by the forwards gave centre Nic Reynolds the space to slice through.

The fully professional Championship outfit went further behind to a 35-metre penalty and then a second Llanelli try.

It was made by Reynolds and carried on by lock Joel Galley who put scrum-half Gareth Davies racing in and make the Bird conversion a simple one.

Scottish looked stunned and conceded another try after just 14 minutes when full-back Dion Jones chipped ahead and recovered the ball brilliantly to plunge over one handed.

Centre Oli Grove brought Scottish back to 20-7 when he cut through weak tackling for a try converted by full back James Love.

A Bird penalty was answered by a second converted Grove try after a kind bounce had let the centre through.

Play was frenetic and Hawkins was over only to lose the ball in the act of grounding to leave it 23-14 at the break.

Love and Bird swapped a brace of penalties as play went to and fro in exciting fashion, with both sides looking for a crucial try.

Love hit the post from 40 metres and wing Jamie Stephenson was forced into touch near the line before Love kicked a short range penalty to make it 29-23 with five minutes left.

Llanelli sealed it with a penalty from replacement fly-half Owen Williams to bring the curtain down on a most entertaining game that keeps Llanelli hopes of qualification alive.
