Match Report

Rhys' 2 tries, Downes Llanelli

Two early penalties from young Ponty outside half Lewis Williams was just the start the Ponty faithful wanted in this full-on Principality Premiership match. However the ‘Sospans‘ were again in no mood to play second fiddle at Sardis Road.

Ponty lost their big second row Ryan Savage after 9 minutes were clearly disrupted and following several easy penalty opportunities, Llanelli eventually got on the board when David Higgins found the target on 17 minutes. Williams then extended the lead to six points but then  Ponty’s Callum Thomas got binned on 25 minutes and Llanelli capatilised with  a penalty from Higgins and then a brilliant break from impressive hooker Kirby Myhill, who off loaded to the ‘Shadow’ Duane Eager and he fed Bowdy Davies in support to touch down under the posts, which Higgins converted. Llanelli  eventually went into half time 16 – 9 up, but if it had been 28 -9 even the Ponty die-hard would have not been surprised.

Llanelli  again started the second period with great confidence but a  counter break against the run of play from former Llanelli player Dan Godfrey opened the way for Rhys Downes to score under the posts which Williams converted.

Tight head prop Simon Gardiner then did his team-mates no favours for his indiscipline, getting a yellow card after five minutes of replacing the reliable and durable Aled Hopkins.

Ponty then sensed the opportunity and sniff of victory, taking their chances with clinical precision as replacement Gunter kicked the resulting penalty and scoring two further tries from James Howe and Downes in their rewarding purple – patch period.

Both sides finished this exciting Principality Premiership match looking for the try that would give them a valued bonus point but efficient referee Sean Brickell brought the game to an end to the delight of the Valley Commandos.
