2010/2011 British & Irish Cup
Pontypridd 12 v 10 Llanelli
05 March 2011 - Sardis Road, Pontypridd

Match Report

B & I Cup Exit

After another away British and Irish Cup tie, Llanelli bowed out of the competition in an intriguing quarter final game at Sardis Road.

Pontypridd outside half Simon Humberstone had plenty of kicking practice kicking 3 and missing 3 penalties before being replaced by match winner Dean Gunter who kicked an injury time penalty to put Ponty into the semi’s and the honour of being the first Welsh team to achieve that.

For luckless Llanelli, prop Shaun Hopkins had an eventful day scoring a good close range try but getting yellow carded in the 69th minute, Steve Shingler converted and added a snap drop goal in the 76th minute to put the visitors ahead before ice cool Gunter regained the lead.

Llanelli threw everything into the last attack and when the Ponty front row went up in the last scrum of the game it seemed that RFU referee Luke Pearce would award a penalty for the same infringement as Gunter’s successful kick. But to the delight of the home crowd Pearce penalised Llanelli once more to end the game.

An unusual fact from yesterdays match was that Pontypool born RFU Luke Pearce never awarded one penalty within kicking range for Llanelli and in fact never awarded a single penalty to Llanelli in the second half.

Nevertheless Ponty are a great team and club and we wish them well in the semi final.
