LLANELLI gained a slender victory over Scarlets colleagues Llandovery to go third in the Welsh Premiership.

A 14th league win of the season for the Parc y Scarlets side left them in the final play-off place behind leaders Neath and Pontypridd.

And it left Craig Hawkins’s side in good heart to receive Newport this Sunday in another league fixture.

The Drovers took a third-minute lead on the back of a counter-attacking try from Wales Sevens star Lee Rees with fly-half Cerith Rees converting.

Fly-half Rees then exchanged penalties with opposite number Owen Williams while Llanelli equalised via a try from lock Nathan White, goaled by fly-half Williams.

Back came Llandovery with a try from flanker Lloyd Phillips, converted by fly-half Rees, but a neck injury to Llanelli lock White delayed proceedings for 10 minutes.

Two penalties from fly-half Williams compared to one by Rees saw the Drovers go in with a 20-16 lead.

During the third quarter Llanelli fly-half Williams swapped penalties with Howard Thomas while Llanelli set up the victory in the 71st minute.

Pressure told, resulting in a close-range try from No 8 Matt Gilbert that fly-half Williams converted.
