WHEN Pontypool and Llanelli have locked horns in recent times there’s been no shortage of tries.
Last month it was the turn of Pooler to take a high-scoring contest at Pontypool Park, 46-40, but this time around the shoe was on the other foot.
The theme continued last weekend, as Pooler were left to reflect on losing a contest despite outscoring the Sospans, 6-5, on try-count.
They scored five tries in 33 minutes to shake Parc y Scarlets to the foundations with O’Driscoll engineering the opener for fly-half Hancock after just seven minutes.
Lock Sam Pailor, full-back O’Driscoll, centre Robinson and wing Jack Butler all followed him over the whitewash, but some equally inept tackling gifted Llanelli scores.
Tries from centres Jonny Lewis and Scott Williams along with flanker Matt Gilbert, allied to 12 points from the boot of fly-half Owen Williams, left Pooler only 31-27 to the good at the break.
All the third quarter produced was two Pooler scores – a drop-goal from Hancock along with an O’Driscoll penalty.
But the game came alive again in the 63rd minute when home scrum-half Justin James lit up the ground with a sparkling solo try.
Fly-half Shingler converted and knocked over a penalty, making it 37 all, but there was still plenty more excitement to come.
Pooler hooker Rhys Buckley then claimed a 73rd-minute try only for Llanelli to make it 44-42 via an individual Shingler try that he also goaled.
A yellow card for Llanelli hooker Rhys Lawrence added to the tension, and when O’Driscoll struck a 78th-minute penalty, the wise money was on Pooler wrapping up the double.
But the 14 men kept plugging away, leading to an 84th-minute penalty award that Shingler nailed.
Eight more minutes of stoppage time followed and although Pooler pressed, that had to be satisfied with a two-pointer.
