Johhny Lewis who opened the scoring for Llanelli tonight at Sardis Road.
After JonGardiner scored the fastest try in the Premiership against Aberavon last week, young debutant wing Luke Morgan (replaced by Craig Jones) was less fortunate against Pontypridd, getting an accidental knock out blow, with less than 30 seconds on the clock.
After the 10 minute hold up and the excellent work of both medical teams, the game was able to resume in poor weather and underfoot conditions.
With regional calls and long term injuries, Llanelli Head Coach Kevin George was still confident his over-stretched squad could get something out of the game and the boys responded with a spirited performance against the Principality Premiership leaders.
Johnny Lewis opened up the home defence for a try after 3 minutes of play with Owen Williams converting to shock the large home crowd. Simon Humberstone then swapped penalties with Williams before former Wales International Gareth Wyatt won the race to touch down for a good opportunist try which delighted the ‘Ole Ole ‘ boys. Further Ponty pressure saw them held up over the line and Humberstone kicking a couple more penalties for a 14-10 half time lead.
The second half was again fiercely, but cleanly contested and it was Adam Thomas and Ponty’s second try that separated the teams. Impressive outside half Williams kicked Llanelli’s only points of the second half and could have stole the match in the closing stages, but a poor decision not to keep’ ball in hand’ in a great attacking position filtered out. However, Llanelli’s hard work resulted in a very valuable bonus point.
