Llanelli lost their first Principality Premiership match at Rodney Parade securing a losing bonus point in their 40 -36 defeat.
A ring rusty, poor, first half performance saw the Llanelli team surprising go in on half time leading 20 -18, with tries from Gavin Quinnell and Aled Davies both converted by Steve Shingler who also kicked two penalties.
'Son of Kingsley’ Rhys, kicked two penalties and converted a Craig Hill try and Newport’s other flanker Sam Waldron also touched down.
Llanelli’s second half performance was a lot better than the first and a quick tap by exciting scrum half Aled Davies set up the try for industrious Matt Gilbert with Shingler adding the simple conversion. The kickers then swapped penalties before Pat Leach cut open the Llanelli defence to score with Jones converting.
On 72 minutes Steve Shingler’s excellent kicking display saw him slot his fifth penalty of the afternoon for a 36 -28 lead. Alcock then touched down with 4 minutes of actual time left but Llanelli were still leading 36-33 and fighting to hold on for the win.Then seven minutes into injury time with Llanelli defending superbly, Cudd won a penalty in the tackle area everyone thought the match was over as Shingler put the ball into touch at the nearest point. With the Llanelli players raising their arms in triumph Referee David Jones said there was “time to play” and after winning the lineout Newport took their opportunity in style as Sub Chris Wannell touched down in the corner which he duly converted for victory.
