Llanelli 29 :: Cardiff 25

Llanelli RFC v Cardiff RFC @Parc Y Scarlets 6th Round SWALEC Cup 22/02/09

13 times WRU Cup winners won their way through to the Quarter finals of this years SWALEC sponsored Cup against a very good Cardiff squad in a pulsating match at Parc Y Scarlets.

Llanelli were good value for their 17-6 halftime lead with outside half Luke Richards orchestrating matters. Luke kicked one penalty and converted the two excellent tries from Wales Under 20 International Nic Reynolds and dynamic flanker Luke J.ones.

Cardiff had their opportunities but poor finishing and wrong options, one in particular by scrum half Andy Williams, saw them only able to register a couple of penalties from Gareth Davies which must have frustrated Cardiff’s Coaching Consultant Phil Davies.

Llanelli then opened the second period with great enterprise and within 10 minutes scoring a couple of quick tries from the other ‘Jones boys’ Ian and Nick which Richards converted for a commanding 29-6 lead.

Matthew Brayley then should have scored which would have put the game to bed, however Cardiff managed to stop the score and with them utilizing their strong bench and also the sin-bining of Llanelli No8 Dan Godfrey, they responded with 14 points during that period. A penalty try was awarded following continual infringement at the scrum and replacement Matthew Veater scored close to the posts, both converted by replacement Lee Jarvis. With 5 minutes remaining on the clock plus injury time, another replacement and former international Craig Morgan scored their third try, but a missed conversion and a penalty from Jarvis blew , what could have been, a great comeback win for the Cardiff team .

Seven tries, 5 Yellow Cards and a couple of ‘dust-ups’ this was a top cup match with the Man of the match going to Llanelli’s outstanding skipper Craig Hawkins.”Ripper the Skipper”
