Garndiffaith RFC v Llanelli RFC (away) 5th Round SWALEC Cup 24/01/09

13 times WRU Cup winners travelled to Garndiffaith RFC to play in the 5th Round of the SWALEC cup, making seven changes from the team that beat Garn’s near neighbours Pontypool at Parc Y Scarlets.

Garn, who were having an unbeaten season to date, kicked off with bags of attitude and confidence and shocked the Principality Premiership ‘Top dogs’ with a try from their impressive open-side Chris Baldwin after just 4 minutes. Llanelli responded almost immediately with intense pressure leading to Garn infringing and Luke Richards opened the floodgates with a couple of penalties, as tries then followed from Aaron Shingler, man of the match Matthew Brayley and Wales Under 20’s ‘cert’ Nic Reynolds who touched down twice. Llanelli’s only concern of the first half was the 3rd minute knee injury to full back Dan Newton who was replaced by Andrew Banfield.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with a further 5 tries coming at regular intervals for Andrew Banfield, Matthew Jacobs, Mike Davies and Ian Jones two. Luke Richards finished the match with 20 points adding 7 conversions to his early penalties.

The final score certainly did not give a true reflection of performance that the young Garn team put up and you could see why they are having such a great season. It would be unfair to pick out any of the Garn players such was the team’s commitment for their village ,but 23 year old second row Matthew Billins did have a great day on the field.

Off the field, Garndiffaith gave Llanelli an outstanding welcome and President Alan Trott and his committee can stand tall in their efforts they put in for Welsh rugby.

With the WRU’s new concept of three Cups, it would make sense that in future, Premier teams would get seeded in the 4th and 5th rounds and then would have to play away at the various village clubs around Wales , after all, these clubs are the life blood of Welsh Rugby.

The draw for the 6th round is Llanelli RFC v Cardiff RFC @ Parc Y Scarlets to be played 20/21/22nd February 09
