Llanelli RFC v Cross Keys RFC @Parc Y Scarlets Principality Premiership 28/02/09
Llanelli entertained Cross Keys in the Principality Premiership at Parc Y Scarlets making 9 changes (2 positional ) from the previous Sundays Cup win against Cardiff.
Scott Roberts at tight head was making his debut while second row stalwart Adam Powell lead the team onto the pitch to mark his 100th appearance for the club.
Cross Keys, who had lowered the colours of Pontypridd the previous week, were led by Dragons hooker Lloyd Burns and were coached by former Wales centre Mark Ring.
Llanelli started confidently but seemed to be lacking their usual tempo and fluency. Yet within 25 minutes they had managed to lead a well organized and committed Cross Keys team 17-3.Wing Mike Davies sprinted in from 50 metres and No 8 Dan Godfrey touched down for his first try of the season. Outside half Dan Evans kicked the both conversions and also a penalty, while Joe Deacon kicked a penalty for the visitors. With the Cross Keys lineout and scrum functioning so efficiently and their continual disruption of Llanelli’s first phase ball, it was no shock when scrum half Owen Jones scored from a quick tap penalty just before half time. Joe Deacon duly added the conversion to bring the visitors within seven points.
In the 45th minute, for the second successive week Llanelli conceded a penalty try at the scrum, as referee Simon Harris awarded the score, Joe Deacon converted to tie the scores, but 3 minutes later Dan Evans restored the lead with a well struck penalty.
Luke Richards, who had replaced Matthew Brayley at half time, was then yellow carded in the 50th minute and Cross Keys duly punished them with a well worked try from wing Will Johnstone and another Joe Deacon penalty.
Trailing by 5 points, Llanelli threw everything at the ‘Keys’ in the closing stages of the match and almost pulled off a draw, as wing Matthew Jacobs could have finished a muli-phased movement on the final whistle.
The disappointment of only their third defeat of the season was eased by knowing that their one losing bonus point was enough to see Llanelli remain proudly at the top of the Principality Premiership.
