Match Report

Llanelli 46 :: Pontypool 8

Llanelli RFC v Pontypool @ Parc Y Scarlets 17/01/09 in the Principality Premiership
Llanelli made seven changes to the side that defeated Swansea on Boxing Day with debutants 19year old Newcastle Emlyn product Scott Williams and French flyer Yannick N’gog both scoring.
Principality Premiership strugglers Pontypool included three Dragon players in their 22 in captain Dwayne Goodfield, Andrew Hall and Tal Selley.
Although inactive for a number of weeks, the league leaders were soon in their stride when in the fifth minute captain Craig Hawkins gathered a miserable Pontypool chip kick and touched down under the posts for Luke Richards to convert. Four minutes later improving full back back Andrew Banfield capitalized on a three man overlap for a good try and in the 16th and 20th minutes Sam Mills and Luke Richards exchanged penalties. Llanelli then finished off the half in tremendous style with the try of the season scored by Luke Richards. After some great play from deep in defence, play seemed to have broken down, but a superb pick up from all action flanker Luke Jones kept the momentum, then good hands from Shingler and a touch of class ‘reverse pass’ from Matthew Brayley worked Luke Richards free to sprint in from 25metres.
It was all Llanelli once more in the second half, as they added four morer tries from Banfield ,Scott Williams, Yannick N’Gog and replacement prop Shaun Hopkins. Richards converted two for a 16 point contribution and battling Pontypool replied two minutes from time with a try from replacement Nicky Coughlin.
Some top performances from the pacy Yannick , the under-rated Brayley, Bater, Godfrey Powell and Luke Jones but the man of the match was Aaron Shingler, who could step up a level to Regional rugby soon.
