Llanelli RFC v Glamorgan Wanderers RFC@Stradey Park06/09/08
Two of the greatest Welshmen to live, Sir Tasker Watkins VC and our beloved Ray Gravell I can imagine enjoying this full on Principality Premiership encounter from their debentures in the sky and what a battle it was with Llanelli just about doing enough to take the 4 Premiership points.
Playing into the breeze on the immaculate Stradey Park pitch Llanelli came flying out the blocks with two excellent tries in as many minutes as the industrious second row Adam Powell in the 6th minute and classy full back Dan Evans 8th minute touched down under the Glamorgan Wanderers posts, Evans converted his own try and outside half Rhys Priestland converted the other.
The Wanderers response came in the 20th minute when fly half Scott Sneddon kicked a fine penalty to register their first points of the season but it was Llanelli who were in charge for the first 25 minutes. However the last 15 minutes of the half was a very different story which belonged to the dogged Wanderers, as they used the ‘pick and go ploy’ through their forwards to great effect. In the 33minute Sneddon kicked a massive penalty from the halfway line and two minutes before halftime wing Jamie Jones scored a good try after a quick tap free kick, Sneddon duly converted to bring them within one point of the homesters.
Rhys Priestland steadied the ship for Llanelli with a 46th minute penalty goal. And the introduction of Gavin Cattle from the replacements bench in the 50th minute seemed to bring a quicker tempo to the team..In the 55th minute Glamorgan Wanderers centre Jason Pocock split the Llanelli defence and only a good scramble defence prevented a certain try which would have given them the lead. The Wanderers however shot them themselves in the foot two minutes later as flanker Nio Aiono became the fourth player to be sin binned by referee Leighton Hodges who followed ‘bad boys’ Rhys Gill and Llanelli’s wing Nick Jones and young tight head prop Simon Gardner to the dug out for a 10 minute cooling off period.
Llanelli scored their third and final try of the afternoon through big prop Ian Jones who finished off some good work by this fellow forwards and Priestland slotted the kick to give them a 24-13 cushion with 20 minutes remaining. For the rest of the match both sides had scoring opportunities as Llanelli were chasing the fourth try and winning bonus point, the Wanderers were hoping to get the losing bonus point. Neither side got the bonus point and Glamorgan Wanderers will perhaps feel they deserved to get something from the game.
