Llanelli opened confidently and after 3 minutes, scrum half Liam Davies kicked a penalty. Six minutes later Bedwas full back Shaun Thomas kicked his first penalty of the afternoon in the Principality Premiership.
Possession and position was the name of the game for Bedwas as they totally controlled the first half. Yet despite their fiery forward effort, they hardly looked like they were going to cross the home line. They did however go in at half time 9-3 up as Thomas kicked two more penalties at slippery surfaced, Stradey Park.
Half Time Llanelli 3-9 Bedwas.
Within a minute of the second half Llanelli had scored through hooker Ken Owens following a couple of forward surges close to the Bedwas line. It was Llanelli who were now enjoying the elements and should have scored again when skipper Ioan Cunningham was help up over the line. Despite all the pressure it was Bedwas who broke up field and Thomas kicked his fourth penalty of the afternoon to extend their lead 12-8. Llanelli again had the visitors under pressure and Liam Davies charged down outside half Welch’s kick, to score an excellent opportunist try, which he also converted. Bedwas then had their big lock forward Watkins sin binned and Llanelli capitalised when Morgan Stoddart touched down. This was Morgan’s third try in three matches following tries against Aberavon and Cross Keys and is a player who could go all the way in the game. Leading 20-12 with twelve minutes remaining, Llanelli appeared to be passed the post, but Bedwas battled back up field and the home team failed to simply clear the line, which gave Bedwas a 5 metre scrum, from which they were awarded a penalty try, and replacement Andrew James converted. Llanelli again responded when ace finisher Craig Richards followed up a Rich Davies grubber to score wide out. Liam Davies had the final say with another penalty goal to finish the match against two contrasting teams.
